Terms like “forgotten gem” or “underrated album” are often used today, but in the case of WAR MACHINE from England they fit like a glove! In 1986, not only was the NWOBHM (New Wave Of British Heavy Metal) already history, but also the previously important label Neat Records, which had done pioneering work with Raven, Venom and Tygers Of Pan Tang, was weakening and losing influence internationally. In 1986, the main focus of fans and journalists increasingly turned to the USA and speed/thrash metal also began to take off. Bad times for “female fronted power metal”, which has its strength in mid-tempo.
Founded in 1983, the band WAR MACHINE from Newcastle released their first demo in 1984. The line up included Steve White, who can be heard on the two ATOMKRAFT demos from 1981 and 1983. The Newcastle-based company Neat Records liked the very hard but melodic heavy metal with Bernadette Mooney's vocals, so the debut “Unknown Soldier” was recorded in the label's own Impulse Studio. The material can be classified as traditional British heavy metal, but also has some riffs that would have suited a thrash metal band. The LP was released in 1986 on Neat and also on Roadrunner Records (Holland). After another demo in 1988, War Machine became quiet. In the early 1990s, various songs from the album appeared on cheap CD compilations as Neat Records' catalog was cannibalized during those years. “Unknown Soldier” itself is now being released on CD for the first time via Golden Core/ ZYX . The booklet also contains, among other things, scans from the former Neat promo booklet “Lead Weight”.
