In all ranking lists on the subject of “US metal of the eighties”, Griffin usually appears earlier and less later, even if they only released two albums. Similar to Cirith Ungol or Manilla Road, the style is very unique, which in the case of Griffin is also due to the unusual singing. The debut “Flight Of The Griffin” (1984, Shrapnel Rec.) is still rather simple. Songs like “Heavy Metal Attack”, “Hawk The Slayer” and the title track are considered classics today. The album also has a powerful sound for an indie production. The successor “Protectors Of The Lair” (1986, Steamhammer/SPV) made things much more difficult for the fans. The material was much harder and faster and had a musty, muddy sound. To this day, the debut ranks far higher than its successor in the favor of metallers. In close collaboration with singer William McKay and band manager Joe Martino, the theme “Protectors Of The Lair” was particularly emphasized. The original 24-track tapes were re-recorded at the end of 2019 and re-mixed in 2020, then also re-mastered by Patrick Engel (High Roller, Metal Blade, etc.). For the first time, “Protectors Of The Lair” appears in new splendor and shows what the album should have sounded like in 1986. This 3-CD package also includes the original mix, which was also remastered for the first time (Patrick Engel), as was the debut. But that's not enough! Each CD also contains a number of demo and live tracks, some of which are unknown even in collector circles and bring each piece of silver to over 70 minutes. In addition to many rare, never-before-seen photos, the booklet also contains a current interview with singer William McKay, as well as other images and information. There is no better way to appreciate the work of a cult band!
