This Victoria-era, British O.H.M.S. cover, and cover fragment from India were both sent in 1863 to a Lieutenant D' Acosta, of the 64th Regiment, then stationed at Aldershot(excellent receiving CDS!), England! The cover was sent on March 27, 1863, by someone with Messrs. Cox & Company, a sort of private credit union for British soldiers, and related to some back pay that Lt. D' Acosta was trying to recoup. Cox & Company basically forwarded a copy of a letter sent to it from the War Office(Originally signed by a J. Milton, of the War Office!)! As for the cover fragment, I am quite sure that it was sent to England from somewhere in India, the previous station for the 64th Regiment! It was dated April 16, 1863(arrived in London on May 6!), the sender was someone with the Indian last name of Colabawallah, and the letter had to be forwarded from London, to Aldershot(superb, receiving CDS!)! It looks like this item may have also had to do with pay from the India Office that Lieutenant D' Acosta was trying to get his hands on!

To continue, as for the rust red, 1-Pence, QV GB issues, they are both in quite good condition! The stamp used on the O.H.M.S. cover has one, slightly shorter perf at its top, right corner. The London S.W. CDS cancel, and district, "bar numeral," cancel are excellent! As for the cover fragment, the Penny Red was almost certainly put on it AFTER it had arrived in England! The London W.C. district, "bar numeral," cancel is fine, and the red, transit CDS cancel from Charing Cross W.C., is too!

Lastly, as for the condition of the two items, the entire is very clean, and in excellent shape(outside of the usual folds and discoloration around them) for something its age! The cover fragment is in pretty good condition, but has more folds, tears, and stains on it. Of course, it had to travel a lot further from its point of origin! All in all, these items are very fascinating, relatively-rare, examples of mid 19th Century mail to a soldier serving with the 64th Regiment in Aldershot, England!
