Zhou yuan Tong bao 

is the currency of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms. It was first minted in the second year of Xiande of Zhou Shizong (955 AD). After Zhou Shizong Chai Rong succeeded to the throne, in order to raise military pay and appease the people, he ordered the destruction of Buddhas at the beginning of his accession to the throne. The bronze statues in the Buddhist temples were destroyed and cast into "Zhou Yuan Tong bao". As a kind of money that destroys Buddhism, Zhou Yuan Tong bao has had a profound and significant impact on the history of Chinese coins and religious development.

Because Zhou yuan Tong bao contains the characteristics of bronze Buddha statues, it was recast in later dynasties to pray 0f or the Buddha's blessing. It was mostly seen in the Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China, and was popular in the Northeast region. This high-relief coin-casting style is difficult to process and consumes copper, so the casting quantity is very rare.

Currently, high imitations of this Zhou Yuan Tong bao are available on various antique websites and a certain treasure website, but there are very few genuine ones. A relatively simple way to distinguish authenticity is: the decorative pattern on the outer circle of the lettering. The genuine product has thick lines and a stable layout, while the imitation product looks like a knife carving and has thin lines. Another issue is the color of the paste. The imitations turn black, while the genuine ones turn dark brown after years of baptism.
